Keep It Legal

This is a great article that I like to always refer to anyone who is curious about copyrights on the internet, and especially as it relates to genealogical research.  I recently finished a class on copyrights, and unfortunately some people do not understand all of the legalities associated with these laws.

Basically, if a lawyer was to determine if someone has infringed on copyrights, especially related to genealogy, they would look at the small percentage that someone is claiming as "taken" compared to the "big piece".  The facts are indeed facts, but stories, thoughts and recollections can (and should) be considered works of an author.

As I have always said, everything I have researched is free to share with anyone.  I have spent weeks upon weeks...now years...getting the "facts" from land... census ...and vital records.  The ladies at the Register of Deeds should be sick of me by now.  (haha)  I volunteer my time to help people with research and enjoy taking surveys of cemeteries just about any time it is sunny.  All of my sources will be notated unless requested to be kept as private by the author.  If anyone requests me to remove anything from my records or finds errors...I will definitely comply with their request to remove it from public view as well.  Remember only take your own sources as fact...and enjoy the "cousins" you meet on the ride.  Life is too short.  LOVE LIVE LAUGH!

Now...I'm off to Vegas for the week!  I will post my updated records when I make it back.  I am deathly scared of flying...so say a quick prayer for me.

Mistake or Misdemeanor

Staying Legal with Internet
Copyrights

"Finally, remember that for every ancestor we are searching for, the potential number of descendants quickly becomes staggering. If the person is your ancestor, there is a good chance he or she can also be claimed by at least another thousand individuals. Unless a distant relative has used some verbatim family story or picture that you have posted to your own Web site, you really cannot claim copyright infringement. No one can own the ancestors and their names, dates, and other genealogical information."
